Finding new ways to celebrate romantic milestones can be tough – sometimes, dinner and drinks just won’t cut it! Perhaps you’ve even been together for so long that you’ve run out of ideas. Take a look at our suggestions for a romantic – and unique – celebration and treat your loved one to an anniversary they’ll remember for years to come.
Make the most of the river
Nothing says ‘romance’ quite like spending time on the river on a beautiful day. Luckily, the Thames and the Kennet are on our doorstep (quite literally, in flood season) and there are many ways to enjoy a day out on the water.
River walks: One of the best ways to enjoy our nation’s waterways is to take a long, slow amble along the riverbank whilst soaking up some sights and catching up on some conversation. There are some beautiful walks aroundReading – from King’s Meadow to Caversham, or even further a field at the likes of Henley or Sonning. Check out the Visit Thames website for seasonal suggestions.
Tea Barge: You could also head over to Whittington’s Tea Barge, a one-of-a-kind floating café for tea enthusiasts. Currently moored at Hill’s Meadow, the intimate setting could provide the perfect cosy backdrop for an unexpected daytime date. This tea room with a difference caters for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Or instead you could visit Island Bar & Restaurant in the middle of the Thames.
Hire a boat: Or, if you feel like exploring, why not hire your own boat and take a leisurely cruise up the river? Caversham Boat Services offers a selection of narrow, motor and rowing boats catering to parties of all sizes.
Learn something new together
Attending a class or learning a new skill with a partner can bring you even closer together. With the variety of clubs and interest groups getting together in the Reading area on a regular basis, there are so many new hobbies just waiting to be discovered. For your next anniversary, why not try one of the following?
Wine tasting: Attend a wine tasting evening at The Tasting House for the ultimate in fine drinking and sophistication. The best part? Quite possibly the bragging rights you’ll earn from learning how to tell your Shiraz from your Sauvignon.
Arts and Crafts: Local arts organisation Jelly can point you in the direction of a selection of craft classes whatever your interest – from pottery to knitting. You’re sure to find something you’re both keen on. Keep an eye on the Jelly website for up to date listings.
Dance class: Or, you could try out a local dance class for a fun workout. Whether you’re a natural or have two left feet, All Jazzed Up run swing dance classes for attendees of all levels. You never know, you might discover a natural chemistry you never knew you had – or at least have a good laugh trying.
Get back to nature
Whilst cosying up on the sofa is all well and good, sometimes it can be nice to inject a little variety into your relationship and venture into the great outdoors! Located in the royal county of Berkshire, Reading town is surrounded by a number of green areas, perfect for relaxation or outdoor pursuits.
Camping: If you fancy a spot of camping or caravanning, Wellington Country Park is a fantastic place to start. The beautiful, friendly campsite is surrounded by natural woodlands, and can offer a peaceful, tranquil stay. Just a short drive from town, you will feel like you’re on holiday in no time at all.
Horseback riding: Horseback riding can also be a fantastic bonding experience. If you both like animals and want to try something new, take in some of the countryside atop a Palmers Stables pony, from their base in Emmer Green. Take a private lesson together, from a very reasonable £27 a head. All going well, it will be just like the movies.
History walks: For history buffs, there are areas of local interest such as the Silchester Roman City Walls and Ampitheatre or Odiham Castle which could both become the focal point of a nice long ramble. Get your walking boots on, take a picnic, and your anniversary day out could well become part of your own history.
Enjoy an overnight stay
Marking the occasion with some luxury hotel accommodation is a tried and tested anniversary move, so make sure you up your game next year by choosing one of these stunning independently-run hotels around Reading.
The French Horn: The French Horn in Sonning provides quality food and accommodation in a beautiful riverside setting. Sit out on the terrace in the morning or early evening and look out over the vast, well-kept lawns at the passing river traffic. Pure bliss!
The Forbury: The Forbury, right in the centre of Reading, is held in high regard by hotel guests and diners alike. Named ‘The UK’s Sexiest Townhouse Hotel’ (make of that what you will), the rooms, restaurant and cocktail bar are all at the height of design and opulence.
Cantley House: Cantley House Hotel in Wokingham is perfect for those looking for a little grandeur. The Victorian mansion offers spacious rooms and grounds, and even an on-site salon should you be looking for a little extra pampering.
Back to basics
Sometimes, something as simple as dedicating a song to the one you love can be the best way to show them that you care. BBC Radio Berkshire invites listeners to get in touch, so why not request that they play ‘your song’ when you know your other half will be listening?
