Used up all your holiday for the year? No problem. You can still look forward to an international experience without ever having to board a plane. Our selection of Reading’s internationally-themed restaurants will inspire you to try new things or revisit the flavours of that dream holiday.
North American – Monroe’s Rib House
For those familiar with Reading, you’ll find Monroe’s where Déjà Vu used to be. Tuck in to burgers, pork shoulder, ribs and buffalo wings – basically, all that good stuff you see in the movies and wish you knew where to find. The combo meals are great for if you’re dining with friends and can’t decide what to order. There’s karaoke, too, for some added entertainment – visit on a Thursday night to take part or simply soak up the fun.
Recommendation: Hickory Smoked Barbecue Ribs – whole or half rack.
Italian – Pepe Sale
Pepe Sale is a delicious Italian restaurant hidden away behind the Broad Street Mall – great for a pre or post-Hexagon meal. Incredibly warm towards groups of all sizes, the staff make you feel instantly at home. The food – including the pasta – is hand crafted on the premises, and you can look forward to tucking into a selection of meat and fish dishes. The fact you have to pay for every side dish can make your trip a little pricey, but it’s worth it as Pepe Sale is definitely one of Reading’s hidden gems.
Recommendation: Duck breast in an aromatic wine sauce.
Mexican – Mission Burrito
You may have walked past Mission Burrito on your way to or from the Oracle Riverside. Sandwiched between Krispy Kreme and McDonalds, this Mexican themed food stop allows you to either eat in or takeaway. Enjoy the selection of made-to-order treats including Burritos (of course), Fajitas, Tacos or salads. Supplement your meal choice with an authentic Mexican beer of soft drink, or man up and take part in the ‘El Doble’ or ‘El Triple’ Man vs. Burrito challenges – not for the faint-hearted, or small-stomached!
Recommendation: Try a salad box if you’re looking to cut the carbs.
French – L’Ortolan
This one is perfect for special occasions. Around a ten minute drive from Reading town centre, at L’Ortolan you will find exquisite Michelin starred French cuisine and first class service. Catering for everything from wine-led tasting menus, to cookery classes, to private dining, there is always something new going on. And, the restaurant aims to be accessible to all, with frequent offers available so it’s easy and affordable to experience French fine dining.
Recommendation: Chargrilled squid with chorizo…foam
Brazilian – Pau Brasil
Up on the approach to Mount Pleasant you will be greeted by the vibrantly coloured, Pau Brasil. With a warm atmosphere and equally warm staff, it seems like a little slice of Brazil has landed in Reading. Having recently celebrated their tenth birthday you can expect a huge variety of South American cuisine to enjoy.
Recommendation: Brazil’s national dish, Feijoada.
Ethiopian – Tutu’s Ethiopian Table
Although a less prevalent choice of cuisine compared to Italian or Japanese, you can enjoy a taste of Africa in Reading at Tutu’s Ethiopian Table. At home in RISC’s internationally-minded Global Cafe, Tutu’s unique Ethiopian dishes have won her accolades and awards in Reading and beyond.
Recommendation: Doro Wot – succulent chicken simmered in spiced butter and Ethiopian spices.
Venuezuelan – Arepas Caffe
One of Reading’s true hidden gems, Arepas Caffe is tucked away opposite Greyfriars Church. Recently warmly reviewed by Edible Reading – the cafe offers a simple yet highly customisable menu. You can enjoy their range of arepas – ‘pitta-like’ pockets which you can fill with a variety of ingredients.
Recommendation: If you’re in the mood for chocolate try one of their churros.
Thai – The Warwick
This unassuming corner building opposite Buzz Gym looks like any other English pub, but step inside and you will find a treasure trove of Thai decoration and an authentic Asian menu to match. Run by Aroy Thai (‘Aroy’ meaning ‘delicious’), the friendly restaurant offers regular deals so whatever day of the week you fancy eating Thai, you can be sure to find a bargain.
Recommendation: Kaeng Panang Curry – a good starter curry if you’re new to Thai.
Caribbean – Perry’s
If you’re looking for a quite bite in town – whether during a short lunch or on the way home from a night out – make sure you pop into Perry’s on High Street. It has an absolutely huge menu including fried fish, rice and peas and more for a very low price. Be warned, Perry’s large portions are most definitely large.
Reccomendation: Rice and peas cooked in a tasty variety of herbs and spices.
Turkish – Mangal
For the finest Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine in town, head over to Mangal on St.Marys Butts. Enjoy mixed mezes (a selection of small hot and cold dishes) or get a taste for a real Turkish kebab, rather different (and a lot more delicious) than your typical takeaway fare. Mangal aim to create an unforgettable atmosphere, with live belly dancers in house on Friday and Saturday nights, too.
Recommendation: Guvec – a hearty meat and vegetable curry.
